Every Journey Starts With One Step

I’ve been moving in so many directions lately and last night I leaped out of bed to jot a few thoughts down and those thoughts became this blog post.

I met up earlier this week for lunch with some friends who happen to also be entrepreneurs {check them out here + here}.The conversation flowed naturally as it always does when you are in good company. We talked about food {we are passionate foodies!}, upcoming vacations, family life and our businesses. A little bit into the conversation my friend Libby posed the question “where do you see yourself in three years?”. For me to think/plan about the future I always pause to reflect about where I am currently, and where I was.

Just about a year and a half ago I decided to take a HUGE leap of faith and started a design + marketing company.  The reason to go out on my own had been a culmination of things. Family/Life balance was the biggest issue. It felt that to succeed in one area I’d have to sacrifice another and after a while I wasn’t willing to make those sacrifices anymore.

If you would have asked me three years ago would you ever start your own business I would have said absolutely not. The idea of working for myself sounded awesome but when I would sit and think it through it terrified me. The truth is I talked myself out of starting my business for years.

Last night I thought how many of us do that – talk ourselves out of our dreams. We let an ounce of doubt overtake our lives and don’t live out what is intended for us. Just a year and a half into this I’m able to fully appreciate the journey and look forward to growing and learning more. What would have happened if I continued to talk myself out of it?

The Hustle Is Real | Cupcakes, Cocktails & Kids

Things have gotten busier these last few months {which is why I haven’t been posting as much on here … so sorry about that btw!} and I’m so grateful to the clients I have and the work that is coming my way. I have never worked so hard in my life but I’ve never been happier. I’m able to spend more time with the kids and manage my own work schedule and it’s very liberating. Is it challenging? Absolutely, but I’ve found anything amazing in my life I have to work real hard at {daily!}.

I feel real ownership for what I do and feel a real connection with my clients, like me they have a dream and they are venturing out and making it happen. I can’t tell you how inspiring it is to be a part of that process – even if my role in the process is small.

I work with a lot woman business owners and in a lot of ways our lives are similar, we are juggling work and home and we are kicking ass in the process. I love hearing their stories of how they turned an idea or passion into something tangible. Some of them have been in business for themselves for years and some of them are just starting out.

If you aren’t happy where you are make moves! Make it happen – be bold and step out even if at first that step seems small. Every journey starts with ONE STEP.

So where will I be in three years? I’m not sure exactly, but I know I won’t be standing in the same spot.  I’m on a journey, I’m motivated and hungrier than ever.

I hope today is your day to take a step. Align yourself with genuine people that have done it or are in the process of living out their dream. Jot some ideas down and imagine where you want to be in 3 or 5 years – if the idea puts a smile on your face go for it!
